LONELIER DAYS
A portrait photography series of my father, Kamal Osnam. A retired Musician, currently disabled as a diabetic type 2 patient with 3 amputated toes and a recent widower. The images taken in this series documents his life at home the past 3 months ever since the passing of his wife before the circuit breaker measures were implemented. Other than being at home, he spends every alternate mornings travelling to Bedok Polyclinic to get his wound dressing.
I named the series “Lonelier Days” as after the passing of his wife, his words and stories have mostly been sad and lonely. I could feel the sadness and loss he feels after his only love of his life has passed and due to his only daughter who has begun adulting, he does most of his everyday activities like travelling and watching movies or dramas all day on his own or accompanied by our cat.
STAY GOLD
“Stay Gold” is a photography series about Muhammad Asrary, who has a skin illness called vitiligo, in which parts of his skin lacks pigmentation leaving white patches on the body, in his case mostly on his face. Knowing him for 6 years now, his vitiligo began to occur when he was thirteen years old. Since then, he struggles to embrace his flaw. He was bullied and experiences social anxiety, making him fearful of meeting new people and being judged, sometimes finds it difficult to explain to strangers about his skin illness, especially children.
I titled my project “Stay Gold” because we’ve been close friends for years, we’ve shared many strong common interests, one of which was the film ’The Outsiders’ where I adapted from the phrase “stay gold, ponyboy”. In the film, the characters Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade share a very strong bond in which I could say would be as similar as my bond with Asrary. In my series, I wanted to portray Asrary as someone who acquires a lot of value to the people around him, his family and friends. Despite his flaws and struggles, I wanted to show through photography that he is attractive and that his existence in this world is significant.
